Library Delays & Closures Policy

Conditions that may be considered for closure or delay include:

  • Snow

  • Ice

  • Extreme Cold

  • Fog

  • Flooding

  • Tornado

  • Earthquake

  • Biohazards

  • Pandemic

  • Power Outages

  • Severe Storms

  • Fire

We are committed to the safety and well-being of everyone on staff and in the community. The library will be open whenever weather conditions in the immediate vicinity of the library are reasonable, to maintain our commitment to our patrons. However, on rare occasions, adverse weather or other conditions may delay library operations or close the library entirely.

When it is determined a delay or closure is not necessary, it is encouraged that library staff make reasonable efforts to get to the library while taking personal responsibility for their own safety.

If conditions make it unsafe for staff to travel to work, please remain where you are safe and contact your supervisor for alternate work arrangements.

MAKING THE DECISION

The Library Director will decide, based on available weather information; school delays/closures; and other library delays/closures, whether to delay or close the library.

DELAYED OPENING

A delayed opening means that due to current conditions, both library locations are not prepared to open before 12 p.m. Every effort will be made to delay opening rather than close the library completely.

CLOSURE

A closure means that due to current conditions, both library locations are not prepared to open for the day. If there is a Level 3 Weather Emergency in Ottawa County, there will be automatic closure of the library.

DECISION TIMES

The Library Director will inform the staff and the community of a delay or closure at least by 8 a.m.

A decision to turn a delay into a closure for the rest of the day will be made no later than 11 a.m.

Unless there are further notifications, delays and closures expire as specified.

COMMUNICATING A DELAY OR CLOSURE

For delays or closures affecting the library, staff and board members will receive notification through:

  • SLING messenger

  • Phone call/Text

The public will receive notification through:

  • Business Closing/Delay Boards via WTOL and WTVG news stations

  • Messaging via Phone automation when calling the library

  • If delay or closure if known the day before, there will also be signs posted at each entrance to the library
